Scholarship Eligibility Expanded in 2019
Lanco Federal Credit Union is currently accepting applications for the Gerald Fortney Memorial Scholarship, a $2,000 award granted to a high school senior planning to earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
Lanco FCU’s Board of Directors established the scholarship in 1985 in memory of Gerald Fortney, Lanco FCU’s founding CEO and an educator in the Hempfield School District. To honor Mr. Fortney’s passion for the business field, the scholarship was originally open only to students planning to earn a bachelor’s degree in a business-related field of study.
Much has changed within the employment and educational landscapes since establishing the scholarship over 30 years ago. With increasing trends toward students entering college with undecided majors, or enrolling in trade and associate degree programs, there are many pathways for students to advance their education and build solid foundations to begin careers.
Recognizing these changes, Lanco FCU’s Board of Directors has expanded scholarship eligibility beginning with the 2019 application period. President and CEO, Stacey Hankey, expressed enthusiasm, stating “the Board felt this change best preserves the spirit of the scholarship and memory of Mr. Fortney’s dedication to student success.”
Students graduating in 2019 and planning to attend an accredited institution to earn an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in any field are encouraged to apply for the 2019 Gerald Fortney Memorial Scholarship. Applications must be submitted by April 1, 2019. Eligibility requirements and applications can be found at lancofcu.com/scholarship or at any Lanco FCU branch location.
